Cast acrylic, GPS and Light Data

Walkways, a new installation by Wan Kyn, transforms GPS data from personal walking routes into a complex sculptural form. Made from layered transparent and mirrored acrylic and illuminated by spatial lighting, the work captures movement, reminiscence and light through data presented in a tangible form.

As part of SG60, this abstract form invites viewers to experience a part of Singapore that is dear to Wan Kyn through a different lens – where memory and data meet architectural inspiration and modern processes. It materializes personal experiences into a tangible form, a spatial archive of movement letting viewers experience it from their own perspective. The story of a city is not only in its skyline, but cumulation of our memories and personal experiences as we traverse this landscape.

Walkways invites audiences to experience the intangible elements of space, such as light, movement and personal experience, through a unique lens. Presenting personally collected GPS and light intensity data from District 15, a neighbourhood that Wan Kyn has called home his entire life, Walkways materializes intangible elements of space by transforming the data into a spatial archive of movement and light, illustrating the deep and complex personal relationship the artist has with this Singaporean Neighbourhood.

Wan Kyn’s work reminds us that the story of a city is carried not only in its skyline, but in the quiet traces of those who walk it. Central to Wan Kyn’s artistic exploration is the belief that space isn't passive; it actively enriches our experiences and shapes our collective memories. Streets, buildings, and daily routes reflect our culture and choices. Reflecting on bike rides and strolls, observing changing shadows under sodium vapor lamps turned LEDs, he draws inspiration from intangible aspects like lighting and human connection with our surroundings.
